Costa Blanca Hot Spots – Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca
Two of the most popular holiday destinations along the Southern Costa Blanca coastline, Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca are beautiful and desirable resorts. Renowned for their clean sandy beaches, lovely marina (Cabo Roig) and their excellent selection of bars, shops and restaurants, Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca offer everything you need for a great family holiday. Though they are very busy during the summer months they are both also superb locations for a holiday any time of the year. Easy to reach from both Alicante and Murcia airports, Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca are handily placed for visiting other attractions along the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida.
Cabo Roig is well known for its amazing detached villas. On the beach-side of the busy N332 coastal road there are a large number of detached villas with beautifully landscaped gardens, many with their own private swimming pools. Some of the finest villas are those along the spectacular cliff walk to La Zenia, they all have fabulous views across to the resort of La Manga. Whilst enjoying this walk, you will really have the feel for “how the other half live” and it is fun to dream about perhaps one day owning one of these “millionaires” villas, but for most it remains just that - a dream. The prominent 16th century watchtower around which Cabo Roig
grew is now incorporated in the famous restaurant which overlooks the fine marina. Playa Flamenca is best known for its busy Saturday market, a fine place to pick up a bargain or two.
The two primary beaches of Cabo Roig (Cala Caleta and Cala Capitan) are both exceptionally popular and are kept clean, tidy and well maintained. The beach bar at Cala Caleta is a popular place for a tapas snack and even the odd midnight cocktail or two, during the hot summer months and the bar is often open until 4am. But be careful, negotiating your way back to the main road can be tricky by moonlight, especially when a little the worse for a drink or three! Playa Flamenca beach is also a very nice, sandy beach and the recently refurbished promenade has improved the whole area immensely, one of the beachside restaurants, Don Engel specializes in lobster dinners, so why not try one of these during your stay.
One of the most popular things to do whilst in Cabo Roig is to take a stroll along the picturesque cliff walk to La Zenia. This walk provides some wonderful views of the Mediterranean and the surrounding coastline, with the exclusive resort of La Manga laying invitingly in the distance. Construction work is currently being done on some stretches of the coastal path, currently at La Zenia and Playa Flamenca and the planned promenade and coastal path should eventually run from Torrevieja all the way to Campoamor, it will then surely be one of the best walks along the Costa Blanca coastline.
On a visit to Cabo Roig or Playa Flamenca you can generally expect fine weather, this part of the Costa Blanca coastline enjoys its own micro-climate and is generally recognised as being one of the healthiest places in the world to live. Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca are blessed with in excess of 300 sunny days every year, and enjoys an average temperature of 20 degrees centigrade. Rainfall is scarce and mostly falls during the winter months, but don’t be surprised to see a heavy downfall in late August or early September, when, after many months of hot sunny weather, the odd thunderstorm is not unusual. Temperatures during the summer months can reach 40 degrees centigrade but usually Cabo Roig enjoys a cooling sea breeze.
For food, drinks and entertainment the majority of visitors head for the busy Cabo Roig strip (located on both sides of the N-332 coastal road) or Flamenca Beach commercial centre (in Playa Flamenca), here you can find a tremendous variety of bars, restaurants, fast food establishments and shops. During the summer months there is plenty of live entertainment available plus the usual array of karaoke, bingo and quiz nights.
There is lots to do in and around Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca, why not start with a trip into the nearby town of Torrevieja, with it’s wonderful promenade and marina and it’s many fine beaches? If you are visiting during the summer months, don’t forget the Aqua Splash park with its gigantic slides and excellent picnic area. If you feel a little more adventurous you may wish to try out the go-karts at Punta Prima, here you can drive the full size karts or the kids can have a go on the mini karts or even the mini quads. In the summer the circus comes to town and this is a great attraction for the children and adults alike, being an old style circus, it has plenty of animals performing tricks to amaze and entertain. The younger at heart may enjoy a trip to the busy resort of Benidorm, a journey of around an hour and a half (a coach picks up in Cabo Roig a couple of times a week). Sporting enthusiasts may partake of the golfing, the water sports (the water sport resort of La Manga is only a 40 minute trip), or the fishing – there are angling safaris available for those preferring fresh water angling.
Two of the Costa Blanca’s prime locations – Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca will surely not disappoint you. Book a flight and enjoy the sunshine sometime soon.
