What are Fraternities and Sororities
March 3rd, 2008
Fraternities and sororities are social organizations that are usually part of colleges and universities. The terms fraternity and sorority mean brother and sister, respectively, from their Latin roots of frater and soror. There are many organizations that are considered fraternities and sororities that are simply social organizations like the Lions Club or the Shriners. But, then there are other fraternities and sororities that are located only on college campuses. These include organizations like Alpha Kappa Alpha. Another example would be Alpha Xi Delta. There are many different sororities and fraternities on college campuses and most of the same ones are located across the country. These are called chapters.
There are many different organizations across the world and many of them have very similar traditions. In fact, these institutions are rooted in tradition. One of those traditions is giving graduates Greek paddles with the Greek letters of the organization and the individual’s name. This is very common and these paddles are treasures the individuals carry with them throughout their lives. There are of course many other traditions these groups enjoy, but this is just one of the most popular ones.
